‘Life is not merely to be alive but to be well’ - Marcus Valerius Martialis

Wellness gifts us the ability to live life to the full and the opportunity to reach our highest potential as human beings. It affects the energy we have to live each day, the capability to do the things we love, be with the ones we love and pursue our higher purpose. Our bodies and minds are designed for us to thrive through life but it's our lifestyle that is the vehicle that takes us to that higher level of wellbeing. Understanding and putting in place the wellness paradigm principles sets you up for the most fulfilling and optimal life possible!

The wellness paradigm displayed below, outlines that the highest level of wellness is achieved through personal awareness, education and growth. The treatment paradigm will at best get someone back to a neutral point of health but this does not mean that they are well (1).

It often is believed that our genes are running the show and that we have little control over disease or illness but this is not true. 80% of chronic diseases are caused by lifestyle choices (2) and we have the power to shape our own wellbeing and health throughout all stages of our life. At a time where chronic disease is at an all time high, a wellness focused lifestyle approach can improve our quality and length of life, prevent illness as well as reverse and cure disease (3).

When we look at high level wellness we first need to be aware of it and the power we have to reach it. Secondly to enhance our wellness we need to know how to, education is essential in all areas of life but understanding our bodies and minds and how to support them is going to be information that we can use for a lifetime. Through awareness and education growth is a beautiful by product. This can be making small healthy changes, which then turn into healthy habits which then turn into a healthy way of living.

Wellness can be looked at in many ways. I break these down into 8 pillars of health.

  • Nutrition

  • Movement

  • Water

  • Sun

  • Sleep

  • Relaxation and mindfulness

  • Community and connection

  • Passion and purpose
